Emotional Processing Characteristics that Differentiate Alcoholics from Nonalcoholics
Choi Hae-Youn

Oh Ji-Yeun
Abstract
This study aimed to identify characteristics of emotional processing in alcoholics that differentiate them from nonalcoholics. The characteristics assessed included level of negative emotion, attention to emotion, emotion recognition clarity, ambivalence over emotional expression, three emotional regulation strategies, and family history of alcoholism. Two-hundred male participants took part in the study, including 60 alcoholics who had been hospitalized in facilities in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, South Korea; 60 recovering alcoholics (at least a year post-treatment); and 80 normal drinkers. The results of the discriminant analysis indicated that intense negative emotions, emotion recognition clarity, and problem-focused active emotional regulation strategies were the key variables that differentiated alcoholics from nonalcoholics.
